NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Toshihiro Uchiyama) today announced it has developed a new high-speed, low-noise deflector type ball screw tailored for European machine tool applications. NSK will exhibit this ball screw, and other innovations for Industry 4.0, in Germany, at EMO Hannover 2017, from September 18 to 23. The ball screw will be available from January 2018, and NSK is targeting 1 billion yen global sales by 2020.
Development background
NSK has long manufactured ball screws to meet the demanding requirements of customers, mainly in the Japanese machine tool market, including the ”High-speed, Low-noise Series“ and other high performance ball screws. As Industry 4.0 and related initiatives continue to transform and advance the European market, NSK saw the need to develop and bring to market new deflector type ball screws, the most commonly used type in European machine tools. To this end, NSK has created a deflector type ball screw that boasts the highest* maximum feed speed in the world, and that conforms to German DIN industrial standards.

Application of NSK's proprietary high-speed, low-noise technology allows a feed speed of 100 meters per minute to be achieved. This contributes to shorter cycle times in machine tools, thereby increasing processing efficiency.

2. Lower noise
Application of NSK's proprietary high-speed, low-noise technology achieved a 4 dB(A) reduction in noise compared to conventional NSK deflector type ball screws.

Analysis of ball behavior using our proprietary simulation technology enabled us to realize smooth circulation of balls within the nut. This contributes to customers achieving highly precise, high quality processing in their applications.
4. Conforms to DIN standards
DIN requires that ball screw nuts have relatively small external diameters. By taking advantage of the compact form factor of deflector type nuts, we created a product that conforms to DIN size requirements. This allows the product to meet the needs of a wide range of customers in Europe.
