New linear ball bearing, series KN..B(Oct 11,2005)
The question as to what improvements should be made to a ball bushing, or more accurately a linear ball bearing, is of continuing relevance to the supplier as well as the user. Requirements continue to increase in terms of performance capability, little or no maintenance work, life and quiet operation compel manufacturers to consider new concepts in the use of alternative materials and new production methods. The engineers and development personnel of the linear specialist INA-Schaeffler KG, 66424 Homburg/Saar not only considered this issue but took rational action. At MOTEK 2005, they are presenting to the market the series KN..B/KNO..B of linear ball bearings, the latest generation of standard machine elements for precise motion.
The new linear ball bearings KN..B/KNO..B are based on a high strength plastic cage, designed for optimum running characteristics and made from an innovative material. The cage incorporates steel load plates, balls, sealing shields and seals. The cage guides the balls, an outer retaining ring made from steel supports the load plates effectively and reliably. The compact bearings have comparatively low mass but can nevertheless support high loads. The new linear ball bearings are available in closed (KN..B) and open (KNO..B) variants.
The bearing design compensates misalignments up to +/- 30 angular seconds with-out this impairing the bearing load carrying capacity or operating life. Due to self-alignment, the balls run into the load zone without any disruption. The new bearing design also uniform load distribution over the whole ball row. In combination with the special design and innovative cage material, this gives smoother running, higher accelerations are possible and overloading of individual balls is prevented. Furthermore, the robust design and optimised construction give a drastic increase of 50% in operating life, compared to the predecessor design.
In turn, this has not only technical but also economic advantages, since in some cases the altogether better performance of the linear ball bearings allows simpler adjacent constructions, reducing the work and expenditure involved in design, manufacture and assembly in terms of the mechanical parts required. Thanks to the initial greasing with a high quality lubricant and the integral lubricant reservoir, the linear ball bearings can be regarded as maintenance-free for many applications. This is supported in practice by effective double lip polyester/elastomer sealing rings on both sides that reliably prevent the ingress of contaminant into the bearing sys-tem and hold the grease securely in the ball bearing. Obviously, relubrication is possible if necessary or under extreme loading and ambient conditions (application and operating temperature range up to max. +80°C). In combination with various housings from the appropriate INA product range, the linear ball bearings are also available as complete, ready-to-fit linear ball bearing and housing units.
