Hardinge has expanded their rotary line to include 2-axis models for complex 5-axis machining to eliminate second and third operations in your shop. When used on a 3-axis VMC this 2-axis positioning system will eliminate the need for sine plates and other expensive fixtures for angular milling. The 2-axis unit is a combination of two of their popular robust rotary systems and can be used as a single component for 5-axis machining, or disassembled for separate operating use. The tilting A-axis is their standard 16C rotary unit while the rotating B-axis is their standard 5C rotary unit. The base 16C rotary unit has a total 360° tilt (±180° from the 12-o’clock position). Adjustable hardware limit switches and programmable software limits are provided to limit travel for protection when large workholding fixtures and parts are being machined. These built in safety features will reduce the risk of possible crashes. The Hardinge 16C Rotary System has a center height of 6” (152.4mm), a clamping torque of 233 ft-lb (315Nm), maximum runout (TIR) of 0.0002” and a 40 arc-sec backlash. The 5C rotary unit is precision aligned to the spindle center to provide tilting in a B-axis. The single B-axis 5C rotary unit will index at a fast 360°/second, has an 82 ft-lb (108Nm) torque, maximum runout (TIR) of 0.0002” and a 40 arc-sec backlash. The 5C threaded-nose spindle will accept collets, step chucks, manual chucks, expanding collets and face or fixture plates. Systems are available in single, dual, triple and quad configurations for multiple part machining for increased productivity. A bearing pillow block assures rigid, accurate positioning of the dual, triple or quad unit. Hardinge’s 2-axis Rotary Systems are built per customer application and are compatible with the Bridgeport and most other brand vertical machining centers.
