The SKF SONL housing is the newest member of the proven SNL family of bearing housings and are designed specifically for oil lubrication and current demands for simplicity, function and economy. The housings are particularly suited to high speed applications such as fans where the speed ratings of the bearings for grease lubrication are exceeded. A deep reservoir that holds a large volume of oil is a key design characteristic of SONL housings. This design reduces the reservoir's oil temperature which, in turn, increases oil change intervals. The oil level in the base of the housing is below that of the bearing and an oil pick-up ring is used to collect oil from the reservoir and feed it into the bearing. This well- proven system means that lubrication performance is less sensitive to variations of the oil level in the reservoir. Churning of the oil and associated overheating are eliminated and oil leakage risk is reduced. The housings are equipped with reliable flinger-type seals of proven design. As there is no contact between the rotating and stationary seal components, friction from the seals is eliminated, allowing bearings to operate at rated speeds for oil lubrication. Unlike former oil lubricated housing designs, where solid bolt-on covers were attached to machined housing side faces, SONL housings consist of a cast cap and base with a solid stationary seal ring that fits into a seal groove in the castings. This novel design speeds up the installation of the housings, since the numerous fixing screws associated with separate side covers are no longer required. Cast alignment indications on the housing base facilitate easy mounting. Each housing's cap and base castings are marked with a unique number to prevent mixing of components during mounting and provide full manufacturing traceability. Other design features that facilitate easier installation include pre-loosened cap bolts and oil level indications in the bases of the housings. To simplify selection and stockholding of spares, SKF adopted a modular approach during the design of the SONL bearing housings. The same basic housing is suitable for use with locating and non-locating bearings (locating rings are used in the located housing), and for through or end-shaft applications. Seal sets and end covers can be ordered as separate items depending on the application configuration. Each housing is supplied with an oil sight glass that makes it easy to visually assess the level and condition of the oil. A magnetic plug is also supplied as a standard accessory to attract ferrous wear particles that collect in the sump. A plugged oil inlet hole is provided in the cap and four tapped and plugged holes in the base render the housings suitable for circulating oil lubrication to meet demanding application conditions. If warranted by operating conditions, one or two auxiliary water cooled tubes can be installed as optional accessories through the oil outlet holes in the housing bases for use with standard oil bath lubrication. The new SONL housings are fully dimensionally interchangeable with the former SOFN design housings which allows for fast, easy, cost-effective upgrading of existing equipment.
