SKF has launched the Rotor Positioning Sensor Bearing Unit, designed to improve the performance of automotive electric power steering systems while reducing fuel consumption and C02 emissions. Compared to conventional hydraulic steering systems, SKF's bearing unit can reduce fuel consumption by around 0.2-0.3 litres per 100km and C02 emissions by up to three per cent. By combining bearing functionality with angular position-sensing technology in a single compact unit, this new device provides accurate and repeatable control of the electric motors used in power steering systems. The unit can withstand external instability such as temperature and magnetic fields, mechanical vibration and electromagnetic interference, while minimised torque pulsations also reduce motor noise. Its compact axial design offers greater flexibility for motor designers. Advanced magnetic technology with low current consumption, as well as plug and play features, enables easy integration into existing electronic control systems to dramatically reduce the time and costs needed for installation and setup. Versions of this sensor bearing unit have previously been used in Valeo's stop-start (StARS) alternators, to provide a powerful and accurate control unit to stop and re-start engines smoothly at the correct time. The technology can equally be applied in the electric motors of hybrid and full-electric vehicles.
