SKF has announced the availability of the SKF DryLube Bearing, a new bearing solution that contains a specially engineered graphite mixture that eliminates the need for grease re-lubrication in hostile steelmaking environments. By moving away from grease lubrication, SKF DryLube Bearings can help mills avoid the associated operating costs and productivity limitations that can occur when grease-lubricated bearings are exposed to high temperatures. Heat causes grease to deteriorate quickly, leaving bearings without adequate lubrication. This can lead to frequent failures, unplanned downtime, product surface defects, lost productivity and costly maintenance. SKF DryLube Bearings feature an engineered graphite based mixture, which provides very low and constant friction, capable of lubricating at temperatures of up to 350 °C. Almost any SKF bearing type can be supplied as an SKF DryLube bearing. "The SKF DryLube Bearing solution is already helping mills worldwide become safer and more competitive," says Colin Paterson, SKF's Segment Manager - Metals. "In one installation, loop guide rolls that had been failing every month are now lasting more than two years. Another mill reports that SKF DryLube Bearings have enabled them to remove the centralized lubrication system for their foot rolls. One mill has even been able to cut insurance costs due to the reduced fire hazard," Paterson concludes. To deal with high temperature applications, mills typically lubricate bearings with a centralized system. This can pose significant fire and safety risks as excess grease can accumulate outside the bearing housings. Water cooling systems are also sometimes used, adding to high investment and operating costs. SKF DryLube Bearings are available in a wide variety of types and sizes and can, therefore, be used in a broad range of equipment and applications.
