E2 "Energy Efficient" bearings - a new generation of rolling bearings - reduce friction and save energy. As the need to conserve energy grows more apparent every day, any technology that enables even a small reduction in energy consumption is big news. Drawing on over 100 years of engineering knowledge and unmatched expertise in the field of tribology and related sciences, SKF has created a new, low-friction performance class. It has always been the job of a rolling bearing to reduce friction. However, over the past decades, bearing design, materials and production processes have changed significantly to meet ever changing market requirements. New industry trend: energy efficiency Forty years ago, bearings were selected more or less only by their carrying capacity. When the SKF Explorer performance class was introduced, bearing service life and reliability came into focus. Today, carrying capacity and life are still important, but many applications need energy efficient bearing solutions to meet growing environmental requirements and energy saving potentials. Since 2007, SKF has been offering E2 deep groove ball bearings and taper roller bearings, which reduce frictional moment by 30% and more. Now the assortment is complemented by E2 double row angular contact ball bearings. Side effect: reduced operating temperature E2 double row angular contact ball bearings have an optimised internal geometry, are filled with a special low-friction grease and capped with shields made of sheet steel. Depending on operating conditions, they can save at least 30% of frictional moment compared to SKF standard bearings, in many cases 50% or more. These are figures received from numerous laboratory tests Due to the reduced friction, the bearing can run anywhere from 5 to 30° cooler, which will significantly increase the service life of the grease. Universal design As they are fully interchangeable with SKF basic design bearings, E2 double row angular contact ball bearings enable easy upgrades of existing applications as well as improving new designs. This assists end users to save energy and cost. In addition they support original equipment manufacturers in the design and marketing of new, energy efficient consumer products. From September 2010, several sizes of energy efficient bearings are available in the 32 A and 33 A series, in addition to the existing SKF Explorer assortment. The range will be extended on customer demand.
