NSK’s Asset Improvement Programme (AIP) has prolonged bearing life and reduced downtime and maintenance costs for a company in the quarrying and mining industry that was experiencing reliability problems with casting units assembled into a vibrating drum.
These reliability problems, caused by the wet, sandy and mechanically demanding environment in which the casting unit support bearings operated, were resulting in bearing failures every two months, or every 440 hours of operation.
In addition, the bearings were difficult to access and replace, which resulted in annual costs and downtime, totalling #8364;3,300 per year on just this one installation alone.
Engineers from NSK were called in to inspect the installation and provide a resolution, as part of the company’s AIP programme — this solution was installing Self-Lube Triple Lip seals on the vibrating drum bearings.
