Recommendation of Long-Life Heavy-Duty Bearings

1. Introduction
The bearing life has long been the major concern of customers, manufacturers and scholars since the rolling bearing was available one hundred years ago. On the basis of elastic mechanics, touch fatigue theory, fatigue statistics and EHD theory etc, the definitions and formulas of load rating and rating life have been worked out by ISO and widely adopted. Meanwhile, relative factors affecting the bearing life have been widely researched since 1940s and great achievements have been made, improving the fatigue life and decreasing the scattering scale (ratio of longest life to shortest life) from more than 100 times to less than 10 times.
To improve the bearing life and reduce its consumption is the eternal objective of both customers and manufacturers. We recommend our research & development for more than 10 years about improving the bearing life.
2. Definition of long-life bearing
Rolling bearings have reached first-class international design level. They are made of good quality steel, lots of measures to improve life have been taken in cool and heat treatments (including technology, equipment, measurement and assembly), and comparison tests have been carried out on good-condition equipment or test machines. The bearing life proved to be greatly improved, therefore it is called long-life bearing.
3. Meaures in researching and developing long-life bearing
3.1Complete three projects of the ministry and province:
(1)Project of “Research on Rolling Bearing Limit Design Method”
(2)Project of “Research on Theory of Rolling Bearing Limit Design Method”
(3)Project of “Test Research on Rolling Bearing Limit Design Method”
China’s heavy-duty design level jumps up to international level through these three achievements, even the design methods of spherical roller bearings and spherical thrust roller bearings reach advanced international level.
3.2Use high quality steel to improve bearing life
Use high quality electro-slag refined steel, which is widely used for aerospace and aircrafts (simply called military-used group A steel).
3.3Take several effective measures in cold and heat treatments to improve bearing life
In forging process, special technologies are applied to optimize metal fiber’s flow direction, increase the viscosity of steel and control carbide mesh & band. In heat treatment process, technology and equipment for thinning tissue and decreasing deformation have been adopted; In the technology, equipment, measuring and assembly of cold treatment, several effective techniques have been applied according to the requirement of average load for multi-row bearings.
4. Service achievements of long-life bearing
Our long-life bearings are widely used for heavy equipment in metallurgy, oil drilling, chemical engineering, heavy mining, ships, port cranes, military and electric station etc. Ten years of achievements are concluded as:
4.1Bearing for production line of continuous hot rolling mill
The home-made working roll bearings in continuous hot rolling mill adopted by Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corp. are supplied by us for a long time. The Machine Ministry and Ministry of Metallurgy evaluated the first and second batches of 77998E (60 sets) at Wuhan Iron and Steel (group) Corp. in 1992 and obtained the following information: 48 sets running normally,
only 12 sets being damaged; the average steel rolling amount has exceeded 1,600,000t;after eliminating un-damaged 20 sets(steel rolling amount is over 2,000,000t),the average steel rolling amount exceeds 1,800,000t.As a result, previous imported bearing consumption of 100-120 sets decreases to 60-80 sets by using our bearings.
4.2Bearing in medium plate rolling mill
The bearing service life is greatly improved by our working roll and support roll long-life bearings in ten medium& medium-heavy plate rolling mills. The average steel rolling amount of the medium plate rolling mill with original domestic bearings is 200,000-300,000t and increases to 600,000t after adopting our long-life bearings. Even the bearings are still being used after steel rolling amount reached 800,000 tons.
4.3Sealed bearing for rolling mill
Compared with imported Japanese sealed bearings, three sealed bearings developed by Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Corp. and us have better performance. The steel rolling amount exceeds 2,000,000t by using our bearings, and that of Japanese KOYO bearings is only about 1400,000t.
4.4Slewing bearing
1) Three-row cylindrical rollers structure is applied on the slewing bearing (OD 4339.2mm) for port stocker. Besides, the cage is improved to be huge steel plate groups structure. Used by Shanghai port, expected result is obtained. The bearing has been working normally since it was mounted in 1988.We have been highly praised by the customers.
2) Replacing imported FAG bearing, our slewing bearing (OD 1500mm roller structure) was applied in chemical fiber equipment for state’s key project in 2000.
4.5 Spherical thrust roller bearing
The dynamic load rating of spherical thrust roller bearing（class 9）has exceeded international level; the service life of various large spherical thrust roller bearing(used in oil, plastic machine and ships) is longer than domestic similar bearings.
