Characteristics of Special Steel Market in 2006
In 2006, special steel industry maintain a good, health and stable momentum of growth. However, scarcity of raw materials like steel scrap, big iron, ferroalloy etc. is a lasting problem to be overcome. In short, the special steel market was characterised by existing demand, higher producing cost, stable price and limited profits.
1. Existing demand
From Jan.-Sept. statistics of 9 major producers of special steel, we can see a good momentum of growth in domestic sales. All of these producers have raised their price to varying degree, inventory volume also increase monthly. Dongbei Speical steel, Baosteel and Xingcheng Speical Steel perform well in doing foreign deals.
Generally speaking, both domestic and international demand for quality steel keep increasing in the first 9 month.
2. Higher produing cost
Cost per ton:
Leading special steel producer: 4223 yuan/ton
special steel producer: 5563 yuan/ton
Sales cost/sale ratio: 91.76%
In 2006, price for ores have increased substantially. Other raw materials and energy resources have grown to different degrees. To raise steel price is the only choice for steel makers.
3. Stable price
From Jan. to May, 9 leading steel producers fixed their price for carbon structural steel around 3472 yuan/ton, 207 yuan/ton higher than that in Jan. a year-on-year growth of 475 yuan/ton.
During the first half, price for special steel keep increasing in a zigzag way. Leading steel makers have balanced output and sale. In the second half, price began to decline. In Sept. average price for quality carbon structrual steel was 3303 yuan/ton, structrual alloy Cr steel was 3512 yuan/ton.
Jan. - May, average price of 40Cr was 3852 yuan/ton, increased by 77 yuan/ton than the prior month; that of non-anneal bearing steel was 3800 yuan/ton, higher than the 3450 yuan/ton in the beginning this year; that of carbon structural steel was 3650 yuan/ton, also higher than the 3150 yuan/ton in Jan.
4. Limited profits
Profits/sale ratio of different steel makers are as following:
First-half
Leading special steel producer: 4.09%
Special steel producer: 3.11%
First 3 quarters
Leading special steel producer: 5.68%
Special steel producer: 4.22%
