Timken Holds Technology Open Day for China’s Students The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR), held its first dedicated Student Open Day Technology Summit for Chinese students last Saturday, 22 September 2007, at the Hyatt on the Bund Hotel, Shanghai. The company brought together under one roof its total technology expertise across industries to give Shanghai’s next generation of industrialists the opportunity to see first-hand why Timken is at the forefront of creativity and innovation in the bearings, power transmission and specialty steel industries. The company gave demonstrations on the bearings and materials that go into many of its engineering feats and revealed how Timken is working side by side with China’s leading companies in key industries and tailoring solutions for its Chinese customers. Some 100 students from Shanghai’s top academic institutions successfully enrolled in the Timken Student Open Day Technology Summit, from Jiao Tong, Fudan and Tongj universities and from the East China University of Science and Technology and the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology among others. Timken’s China president, Mr James Gresh, led a series of presentations by various departments of the company from across China. Engineering experts from Timken explained how the wheels of giant aircraft support 421 metric tonnes of weight at speed every time they land using Timken bearings and steel, how high-speed trains can travel so fast (and so high),as well as many more stories of the remarkable applications of innovative friction management and power transmission products and services that are used here in China and around the world. Students raised questions concerning whether or not they would encounter great obstacles when choosing a job irrelevant to their majors, or what would limit their career development, whilst current Timken employees shared with the students their own career experience. Under the theme of “leading innovation, creating China partnership”, the event included specially constructed exhibits highlighting Timken’s technology in action. Best-practice case studies of Timken’s technology were also showcased. “The Student Open Day Technology Summit brings to China the culmination of more than 100 years of Timken’s engineering knowledge and expertise from around the world,” said James Gresh, president of Timken’s operations in China. “It’s the kind of know-how that we bring to our customers here in China as we partner in the development of their businesses and tackling their engineering challenges here.” Since Timken is the only global bearing company in the world with its own advanced steel making capabilities, it is well positioned as a true partner for both the steel and bearing markets. The company displayed nine booths for participants to truly get to grips with the latest products and technologies. The nine booths comprised: • Steel Material & Precision Steel Components • Bearing Product Range • Package Bearings • Sensor & Electronic Controls • Engineered Surfaces/Coatings • Bearing Setting Tools • Bearing Maintenance/Repair Tools • Service & Lubricants • Fuel Efficient Demonstrator Test Rigs. Timken has attached great importance to playing a leadership role in the future of China’s bearings industry since entering China in 1992. Apart from bringing its innovative advanced technology and products to China, Timken has also supported the education of China’s next generation of engineers and development of industrial talent. The company has its own Technology Training Center in Wuxi and regularly holds seminars and education sessions in China. Gary Doll, Chief Technologist, Timken, flew directly from the Shanghai Open Day to present such a seminar at the Henan University of Science and Technology, one of the universities in China that benefits from Timken student scholarships.. ”I am so excited to have this opportunity to exchange thoughts with these seniors in engineering majors,” said Zhong Yang, a post-graduate student attending the event. “We don’t have such access to these precious experiences on our campus. And we usually feel so frustrated when trying to do so on our own. Today, after listening to their stories, I have more confidence in my job-hunting after completing my studies, and I have better insight into choosing my career direction. I hope I can work with a leading industrial company like Timken someday.” ”I feel quite fortunate and proud to work with such a great company like Timken,” said Mr Gresh. “The company provides a broad stage for people with engineering backgrounds. Timken is supportive to the education of China’s next generation of engineers and I’m delighted so many of those students attended our Open Day.
