Carraro Inaugurates New Plant in China The new Carraro plant in China has been inaugurated today in Qingdao, in the Shangdong province, in the presence of Mario Carraro and Carlo Borsari, respectively Chairman and Managing Director of the Carraro Group. The ceremony saw the presence of the Italian Ambassador for China, Riccardo Sessa, the Qingdao Deputy Mayor, Zhang Yuanfu, the Chengyang District Director, Wang Luming, and other important figures of the local political scene. The new production site, realized with an investment of 15 million Euros, covers a total area of 23,000 square meters and is assigned to the production of transmission systems for stationary applications (such as escalators), integrated transmissions for forklift trucks and material handling, axles for agricultural tractors and earth-moving machines. The plant, built in less than 6 months from the laying of the foundation stone, is fitted with cuttingedge processing centres and advanced production lines and represents a new prestigious stage in the internationalization process started by the Group at the end of the Nineties. The structure has been designed in anticipation of a further strengthening of the Group production capacity in the near future, with opportunities for a widening of both the mechanical processing and assembling areas. The industrial presence of Carraro in China started at the end of 2004, with the creation of the first Carraro factory in Qingdao, a strategic location because of its geographical position (half way between Peking and Shanghai, 2 hours’ flight from Korea and Japan), as far as structures (it’s China’s third industrial port) and development prospects (proximity to some of Carraro’s main clients, such as Kone and Foton Lovol) are concerned. Since Qingdao has been chosen as the water sports venue at the next Olympic Games in 2008, further growth of infrastructures is forecast. Here, with a productive area of 10,000 square meters, epicyclic reduction gears for the market of tracked applications (such as excavators) and for stationary applications have been produced, in addition to axles and transmission systems for material handling applications. The opening of the new plant – replacing the previously used site – is the answer to the Group’s strategic choice of achieving important growth targets in China, both from the point of view of production capacity, thanks to the optimization of the supply and recruiting costs, and from the point of view of sales in a geographical area with extremely interesting development prospects. In the next three years, the main reference segments of the Carraro Group are forecast to grow considerably in China. Because of these developments, the turnover of Carraro China is forecast to grow from 10 million Euros in 2006 to over 110 million Euros in 2009. Similarly, the number of employees shall exceed 240 units, while now there are only 88. In perspective, the Carraro China plant shall also become a new reference point for Research &Development, following the successful example of Carraro Technologies India, in Pune.
