GGB Opened Its First Asian Manufacturing Facility in Suzhou

GGB, formerly Glacier Garlock Bearings, recently opened its first Asian manufacturing facility in Suzhou, China, approximately a two-hour drive west of Shanghai. Constructed to current Western standards, the 4,000-square-meter plant will produce the company’s metal-polymer and filament-wound plain bearings for the automotive, hydraulic, construction equipment and hydropower markets. “The Asian market presents us with the largest growth potential of any of our geographic regions,” explained Joseph Fults, GGB vice president for Asia. “To capitalize upon this potential requires not only a sales presence, but locally sourced product as well. Our objective is to achieve market share in Asia comparable to what we enjoy in the U.S. and Europe.” The plant is presently equipped to produce metal-polymer plain bearings, but GGB will continue to invest in the facility to expand its capabilities to other product lines as well. GGB entered the China market with a sales office in Shanghai in 2004, followed by another in Beijing in 2007. The company plans to open a third office in South China later this year.
