Schaeffler Group Industrial has brought a new Metal-Polymer Composite Bearing onto the market under its INA brand. The new INA plain bearing is particularly effective in oscillating applications and achieves a higher rating life than existing bearing types. In addition, all the new Metal-Polymer Bearings are lead-free and, therefore, environmentally friendly.
Low-wear sliding characteristics
The special characteristics of INA Metal-Polymer Composite Bearings are due to the combination of plastic and metal materials. This composite material allows low-wear sliding characteristics as well as a high load carrying capacity and thermal conductivity. A static load carrying capacity up to 250 N/mm² is achieved. The material can also be used in water or other media due to its high moisture resistance.
The INA Metal-Polymer Composite Bearings are a cost-effective alternative for applications with minimum available space and a comparatively high sliding speed. The plain bearings are available as bushes and flanged bushes, as well as thrust washers and strips. The excellent material formability also enables customer-specific components to be designed for different rotary, linear and oscillating motions.
Maintenance-free or low-maintenance
The new series of INA Metal-Polymer Composite Bearings include three different material types: A selection of bearings with maintenance-free and low-maintenance materials are available under the designations E40 and E50. Their structures are similar: A porous bronze-sintered structure is applied to a steel or bronze backing and impregnated with a special plastic compound. The solid lubricant produces a lubricant film between the sliding surfaces, which provides low-noise operation with a constant low friction coefficient throughout the entire service life.
Bearings of type E40 are generally maintenance-free, i.e. there is no lubrication requirement over the entire operating life. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and different chemically inert additives are used as a lubricant. Typical applications are, for example, in fluid technology, sports equipment, medical technology or electrical engineering, as well as the automotive sector.
Type E50 is low in maintenance, initial grease lubrication is required at the start of operation. The sliding layer comprises mainly polyoxymethylene (POM), a high-molecular thermoplastic that is characterized by low friction values as well as chemical and thermal stability. The applications for this material are especially in the production machinery, construction and agricultural machinery, as well as commercial vehicle sectors.
Bearings with the type E60 sliding layer are maintenance-free foil bearings. They are based on a lattice structure in which a sliding layer comprising PTFE and additives is rolled and sintered. The structure functions both as a backing and a sliding layer. There is a sliding layer containing PTFE on both sides of the foil so that the sliding motion can take place on the inside and the outside of bushes. A further advantage of this material is that it can be easily molded. Typical applications for foil bearings are fittings and tools, as well as hinges.
