Peek performance for the Tour de France

Ros, a German manufacturer of high-performance plastic components, has chosen Victrex Peek for a new line of bearing cages developed for sports applications. According to the manufacturer, cages made from the polymer offer a combination of strength and flexibility. Also, the good sliding properties of the material and the smoothness of the cage surfaces (which are in contact with the rolling elements) generate little friction so that wear in the bearing is kept at a minimum. In addition, the low density of the material means that the inertia of the cage is minimal, which can contribute to quicker acceleration. As a result, Victrex Peek bearing cages from Denmark’s CeramicSpeed, designed in partnership with Ros, were used by almost half the teams competing in the 2009 Tour de France. “They can improve an athlete’s equipment,” explained Werner Beuerlein, managing director at Ros. “The bearings do not need any lubrication, which positively influences performance.”
