Mexico's Flats & Longs Steel Output, Consumption On The Rise

Mexico's steel output and apparent consumption were up during the first half this year over the same period in 2009, reaffirming the industry's rebound. Domestic mills produced 3.65m tonnes of flats from January to June, a 32.7% increase over H1 2009, when output came to 2.75m t. In the same comparison, apparent flats consumption increased 42.6%, to 4.55m t, Steel Business Briefing learns from the country's steel association, Canacero. Meanwhile, Mexican longs output totaled 3.22m t during H1 2010, against 3.06m t during the same period last year. Apparent longs consumption came to 3.16m t during January-June 2010, up 5.6% year-on-year. The country's rebar output, however, was the only product to report poor results comparing H1 2010 to H1 2009 (see table), due to a decline in domestic construction activity. SBB was told by local players that current Mexican steel demand is considered good, but stable.
