FAG’s New High-tech Cronitect® Hybrid Roller Bearing
FAG’s new high-tech Cronitect® hybrid rolling bearings for bicycles are sending shockwaves through the high-end racing bike segment. By combining high-performance Cronitect®-steel bearing rings with ceramic rolling elements, improving the raceway geometry, and adding an innovative friction-reducing seal, FAG has pushed the performance envelope to the next level. The result: less friction, greater corrosion-resistance vs. traditional stainless-steel bearings, reduced wear, and less weight.
Campagnolo, the Italian cult brand and manufacturer of high-end components for racing bikes, demonstrates the full potential of combining clever mechanical engineering with optimized bearings: under the CULTTM (Ceramic Ultimate Level Technology) brand name, Campagnolo uses FAG’s Cronitect® hybrid rolling bearings in its new premium Super RecordTM racing set, where the new FAG bearings can be found in the bottom bracket and in the premium carbon wheel hubs. Since 2008 these bearings have been helping riders to successfully compete in international racing events such as the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.
Cronitect® is the result of Schaeffler’s continuous development efforts in the area of high-performance stainless steels. Rolling bearings made from this new material can be used in extreme environments (i.e., when coming into contact with corrosive media such as water, acid, or cleaning solvents), or they can operate under dry running conditions. For the Cronitect® hybrid rolling bearings in its premium racing bikes, Campagnolo recommends using only a thin layer of oil; no grease is required for lubrication. Innovative seal design and cage solutions provide added protection and ensure maintenance-free operation.
