E1 Radial Spherical Roller Bearings in X-life Quality:
The FAG E1 spherical roller bearing is the classic bearing variant for the rotor main shaft in wind turbines. This rolling bearing design in X-life quality combines a high load carrying capacity and an angular adjustment facility. Schaeffler Group Industrial also now offers bearings with a steel cage instead of the conventional solid brass cage for the typical sizes used in medium-size wind turbines with outputs from 1.4 to 2.1 megawatts. These are bearings with a bore of 600 mm (outside diameter 870 mm) and 630 mm (outside diameter 920 mm).
The steel cage is split and guided on the inner ring. This means it is especially ideal for applications in wind turbines. The cage halves can rotate at different speeds if alternating or unequal loads are applied to the two rows of rolling elements. This puts less strain on the cage. The surfaces are also hardened, which also increases the wear resistance. The high-strength steel used allows the cage to be designed with a very thin wall thickness. Overall, the steel cage occupies only around one third of the volume taken up by a conventional solid brass cage. This means more space remains in the rolling bearing for the lubricant and the distribution of the lubricant is also improved. The overall bearing operating life is increased as a result.

All parameters for FAG E1 spherical roller bearings were redesigned and optimized with regard to this aspect. The result is increased robustness and load carrying capacity, less friction and increased efficiency, as well as a longer operating life. The design measures lead on average to a 50 percent higher limiting speed and allow the dynamic load rating to be increased by 15 percent. In line with X-life premium quality, E1 spherical roller bearings offer product characteristics that are over and above the conventional standard.
Improved roller design:
This has been facilitated, for example, by the optimized roller design. The dimensions and number of rollers reduce stresses and result in a higher load carrying capacity. At the same time, the convex form of the roller end faces ensures a low-friction contact between the rollers and the rib. This leads to a reduced temperature in the bearing and increased efficiency. The optimized rolling contact surfaces, for example, the fine surface structure and the matching of the contact surfaces on the inner and outer ring also result in less friction.
Floating central rib:
The floating central rib guides the rollers in an axial direction and thus contributes to more precise bearing kinematics. It can rotate independently at its own speed and align itself axially. The floating rib also enables axial alignment of the rollers relative to the inner ring and improves the load distribution if combined radial and axial loads occur. This results in less friction and wear as well as a longer rating and operating life. The floating central rib supports cage guidance in a radial direction. This makes the bearing more robust as a whole.
