SKF Low Weight Hub Bearing Unit
The SKF Low Weight Hub Bearing Unit is a new wheel end solution of the flanged hub bearing design that contributes to a significant weight reduction and thereby reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. By combining steel, which provides the expected rolling bearing performance, with aluminium, as the flanged structural component, the overall weight can be reduced by up to 30% compared to the standard unit.
Examples:
For premium cars the SKF Low Weight Hub Bearing Unit is able to reduce the weight by 1 kg per axle, reducing emissions approximately with 0.1 g CO2/km.
For light commercial vehicles the SKF Low Weight Hub Bearing Unit is able to reduce the weight by 3.5 kg per axle, reducing emissions approximately with 0.3 g CO2/km.
This has been calculated by the SKF Vehicle Environmental Performance Simulator based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
This new bearing type will give increased mileage to a wide range of vehicles, including electric vehicles, while for the light commercial vehicles it will also offer a load capacity increase.
An additional benefit is improved vehicle handling due to the fact that un-sprung masses in the wheel-corner unit are reduced.
The SKF Low Weight Hub Bearing Unit is mainly for new car designs, but in limited cases retrofitting with existing hub bearing unit solutions can be done.
The new bearing unit is a result of research into the use of new materials with a design that would maintain stiffness, endurance and structural integrity, under both corrosive and varying operating temperatures. This low weight wheel end solution, despite the partial material change from steel to aluminium, has maintained the same performance and reliability levels as the standard all-steel version.
