Timken Foundation donation supports Cole Eye Institute

The Timken Foundation is helping to further medical education with a $1 million donation to help finance an eye surgery lab at the Cleveland Clinic’s Cole Eye Institute. The clinic opened the 600-square-foot Louise Timken Microsurgical Education Lab at the Cole Eye Institute on Monday. The lab will be the centerpiece of Cleveland Clinic’s ophthalmology residency education program. Residents will use the state-of-the art surgical stations that imitate operating room experiences, as well as through the use of an ophthalmic surgical simulator. The lab also will provide first-year residents with a full year curriculum. Former ambassador W.R. Timken Jr. said the Timken Foundation is “proud to support transformational learning at Cole Eye Institute and the new high-tech education center.” The Timken Foundation chose to name the center for the late Louise Timken, a family trailblazer who had macular degeneration. Louise Timken, who died in 1998, was a pioneer in aviation and is known as the first woman in the country to fly and own a jet aircraft. “Eyesight is so vital to our everyday lives and we often find ourselves taking our sight for granted until it is compromised,” W.R. Timken Jr. said. Daniel F. Martin, Cole Eye Institute chairman, said the Louise Timken Lab is viewed as a vital undertaking to provide advanced training for ophthalmology residents. The institute believes the new lab will benefit patients by providing doctors with a better training experience.
