Timken develops product library to aid customers

CANTON —RTimken Co. has teamed with two other businesses to create a process that helps potential customers get a better look at the company’s products. The bearing maker is offering authorized distributors a system that enables them to seamlessly link their websites to drawings of thousands of Timken products. The link displays three dimensional CAD models and two dimensional drawings. Timken said the system more easily and efficiently offers customers access to technical information from the company and its distributors. Timken worked with the Thomas Enterprise Solutions Group to develop the system and piloted it with BDI, which is based in Cleveland. Using the technology from Thomas Enterprise — part of Thomas Industrial Network — Timken provided direct access to its engineering drawings for BDI’s online customers in the required format. Customers visiting BDI’s e-commerce site can research and select products, compare prices and complete purchases. Christopher Henson, Timken’s director of U.S. industrial sales, said in a press release that the company worked closely with Thomas Enterprise to centralize information about Timken products, including detailed technical specifications, and the build a library of models and drawings. The systems helps customers understand how they can use Timken parts. Bill Shepard, a BDI vice president, said his company used to collect data on Timken products from print catalogs and spreadsheets. When Timken updated a product file it required a manual review that could take months to complete. Now images can be downloaded quickly in multiple formats.
