Gear Motions acquires Niagara Gear

Gear Motions has acquired Niagara Gear Corp. in the Town of Tonawanda, adding to its family of companies. The sale price was not disclosed. Syracuse-based Gear Motions also owns Oliver Gear and Pro-Gear in Buffalo, and Nixon Gear in Syracuse. Matthew Babisz, who bought Niagara Gear in 1974, is retiring after about 60 years in the industry. Gear Motions said the rest of the 25 employees will remain with the company, with Robert Barden, vice president and general manager of Niagara Gear, running the day-to-day operations. Niagara Gear will also continue to operate from its facility on Military Road. Niagara Gear makes precision ground spur, helical and pump gears. Gear Motions’ president, Dean Burrows, said Niagara Gear has a strong presence in markets that Gear Motions has not traditionally served, such as the military and aerospace high-speed pump gear markets. Sam Haines, chief executive officer of Gear Motions, said in a statement of the deal: “It enables Gear Motions to offer more precision applications to a wider customer base and also permits Niagara Gear to supply larger ground and cut spur helical gears to its existing customers through its new sister company, Oliver Gear.” Babisz in a statement said Niagara Gear’s workers will be incorporated into Gear Motions’ Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Oliver Gear has a plant on Niagara Street in Buffalo.
