Jakarta. Pertamina Lubricants, a unit of the state energy company Pertamina that produces engine oil and brake fluid, is planning to spend Rp 1.3 trillion ($114 million) to finance two new high-quality lubricant factories. The factories will consist of a grease plant, worth Rp 500 billion, and a lube-oil blending plant, worth Rp 800 billion. “The capacity of the grease plant in Tanjung Priok [North Jakarta] will reach 8,000 metric tons per year — the most modern in Southeast Asia,” Hanung Budya Yuktyanta, Pertamina’s marketing and trade director, said last weekend. Construction of the new grease plant is planned to commence in June next year while the lube-oil blending plant, also in Tanjung Priok, is currently under construction, he said. Supriyanto DH, Pertamina Lubricant president director, said construction of the lube oil-plant was expected to be completed in December this year. Pertamina, which now has a presence in 25 countries, currently operates two lube-oil blending plants in Cilacap, Central Java, and Surabaya, East Java. “We will have one of the highest capacities in the region. When the construction ends, our capacity will reach almost 600,000 tons per year,” Hanung said. Many lubricant manufacturers are gearing up for expansion to catch up with the growing automotive demand. Last year alone, the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo) reported that a total of 1.2 million vehicles were sold in the country, up 9 percent from the previous year. Pertamina is also in the process of acquiring a production facility in Thailand, which will be the company’s base of production in the Indo-China region according to Hanung. “We also plan to be aggressive in marketing to China and partner with a lubricant company there,” he added. He said the company plans to continue expanding and increase penetration in new and existing markets, such as Australia, Singapore, Japan, Middle East, Europe, the Indo-China region and China. “There is still potential in the domestic and overseas market. For Indonesia, the market is worth around Rp 20 trillion. Currently, we dominate the domestic lubricant market by about 60 percent to 62 percent, while our biggest competitor only controls about 10 percent,” he said.
