ROCKFORD — A company carrying on Rockford’s legacy of making screws and bolts and a teacher trying to attract and train the next generation of manufacturing employees won honors Thursday night from the Rockford Chamber of Commerce. Rockford Fastener Inc., 725 South St., was named the 2014 Manufacturer of the Year and Christina Magee, the college and career academy coach at Guilford High School, won the Business Catalyst Award. The awards were announced at the annual Celebration of Manufacturing Expo and Dinner at Cliffbreakers. Rockford Fastener was founded in 1977 by Bill Orman. The company makes an array of bolts and screws. The company was nominated by Field Fastener, a Machesney Park distributor, which cited the company’s ability to stay competitive by managing “stocking programs, reduc(ing) lead-times and provid(ing) superior service.” The company has to go above and beyond to maintain its position in an increasingly price-competitive industry. Rockford for decades was known as “the screw capital of the world” because we were home to such huge fastener companies as Rockford Products, National Lock, Elco Tool and Camcar. Those large employers have either left or changed products because of overseas competition, but the fastener tradition is being carried on by smaller companies, such as Rockford Fastener, which employs about 100. Magee was honored for her efforts to make sure companies can find skilled workers to replace retiring baby boomers. Magee is a mentor for the Rockford Robotics team that is competing in the FIRST Robotics regional in Milwaukee and is working to expand the program to all of the city’s high schools and middle schools. As a teacher at Eisenhower Middle School, she helped create Surgeons of Steel, which gave 30 selected students monthly field trips to the area’s largest and most advanced manufacturers to give them exposure to modern machine development and building. Magee is working on expanding the program to include students from Lincoln and RESA.
