CERRITOS, Calif., June 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Calnetix Technologies, a pioneer in high-speed permanent magnetic motor generators, power electronics and magnetic bearings for a variety of applications and industries, announced today that Venky Krishnan, Director of Programs, and Larry Hawkins, Director of Technology, Magnetic Bearings, will present at the ASME Turbo Expo in Dusseldorf, Germany next week. On Tuesday, Krishnan, along with Keiichi Shiraishi, Senior Business Development Manager for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery and Engine Company, will discuss the development of the companies' Electric-Assist Turbo for Marine Turbocharged Diesel Engines, which consists of a specially designed high-speed permanent magnet motor directly mounted to the turbocharger rotating assembly to improve engine performance and reduce electric power consumption at low load. "Turbocharged diesel engines suffer from inherent deficiencies at low engine speeds," said Krishnan. "There is not enough energy in the exhaust to produce an optimum and readily available level of boost for the engine intake air system at off-design points. The Electric-Assist Turbo allows the system to provide the charged air needed to maximize engine performance without the use of auxiliary blowers. The majority of large marine vessels are now operating in a 'slow steaming' part throttle mode, making this technology even more important." On Thursday, Hawkins will discuss recent test results and analytical predictions for vibration testing of a magnetic bearing supported direct drive compressor intended for U.S. Navy shipboard use. Koman Nambiar, Principal Engineer for YORK® Navy Systems, and Calnetix's Development Engineer Rasish Khatri are co-authors of the paper being presented. "The compressor was placed on a U.S. Navy MIL-STD-167 shaker platform and driven at sinusoidal frequencies from 4 to 33Hz at graduated displacements equal to a maximum of 1.5Gs," said Hawkins. "During the machine design phase, a linear forced response analysis was conducted on the coupled rotordynamic system model of the rotor, housing and magnetic bearings. The analysis predicted rotor and housing displacements as well as actuator loads. Our results were used to guide bearing sizing and control algorithm design." In addition to the presentations above, Calnetix will exhibit its latest technology at the ASME Turbo Expo, which, now in its 59th year, has a well-earned reputation for bringing together the best and brightest experts from around the world to share the latest in turbine technology, R&D and application in the following topic areas: gas turbines, steam turbines, wind turbines, fans/blowers, solar Brayton/Rankine cycle and supercritical carbon dioxide.
