Auto parts supplier expands in Valparaiso

UGN Inc., a Tinley Park, Ill.-based manufacturer of acoustic, interior trim and thermal management products for cars, chose earlier this year to build a $50 million plant in Ohio instead of Indiana after economic development officials in the Buckeye state courted the investment more aggressively. But UGN, a $375 million supplier that operates eight plants in the United States and Mexico, is now looking to bulk up its 180,000-square foot plant in Valparaiso, where more than 325 full-time employees work. The factory just south of the Porter County Municipal Airport makes a variety of products, including dash insulators, engine side parts, carpet systems, die-cut insulators and seat belt protectors. "This expansion ensures UGN continues to supply our innovative products to the automotive industry as production continues to grow," said Peter Anthony, chief executive officer of UGN. "The expansion at our Valparaiso plant is in a central location – and close to our headquarters – and we have a skilled workforce there, which we look forward to expanding." UGN, a joint venture between the Japanese firm Nihon Tokushu Toryo Co. Ltd. and the Swiss company Autoneum, plans to invest $4.8 million in new equipment and a 30,000-square-foot expansion. The investment will allow the just-in-time factory to make parts for the next-generation Honda Civic, which is made in downstate Greensburg, and the Subaru Impreza, which is produced in Lafayette. The company will start hiring next summer, and is looking to add up to 14 manufacturing and technical jobs. "It is wonderful to see another local business decide that Valparaiso is the right place to invest capital resources and grow," Mayor Jon Costas said. "We value UGN and its current employees, and we look forward to welcoming new employees as result of this investment." The state of Indiana is giving the company up to $115,000 in tax breaks, and the city of Valparaiso extended a tax break of up to $259,759 over 10 years. Earlier this year, Indiana lost out on a 206,400-square-foot factory where 150 workers will make carpets and underfloor units. The company decided instead to build the $50 million facility in Ohio on the Interstate 75 corridor between Cincinnati and Dayton because Ohio was more aggressive and Ohio Gov. John Kasich met with company officials right away while the Indiana state government was slow to respond.
