NORTH CANTON, Ohio: August 12, 2014 — The Timken Company (NYSE: TKR; www.timken.com) congratulates Meggitt Aircraft Braking Systems in Akron, Ohio, for becoming the first aerospace bearing maintenance facility to receive Timken Bearing Certification. Timken presented the certification signifying the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) shop adheres to Timken standards for bearing removal and handling, cleaning and inspection, analysis of bearing damage, bearing setting and adjustment, and bearing storage. Timken® bearings are installed on Meggitt aircraft landing wheels.
The MRO shop supports the installed fleet of Meggitt wheels and brakes throughout the world, cleaning and reconditioning the wheel and brake assemblies. As part of this certification process, Timken trained shop personnel in the proper cleaning, inspection and storage of wheel bearings. By training its associates in the proper techniques and then auditing and certifying the process, Meggitt has indicated its confidence that the bearings returned to service are properly cleaned and inspected and will deliver their full life potential. Meggitt is exploring opportunities for its two other MRO locations in Coventry, United Kingdom, and Singapore to achieve certification as well.
Timken offers comprehensive support of the aircraft landing wheel market sector, including dedicated engineering during the initial design concept stages through service engineering support worldwide to the installed base. After long offering bearing maintenance certification programs for various industries, Timken recently added a similar program tailored to the stringent performance demands of the aerospace industry. The certification incorporates the company’s decades of expertise and best practices in maintenance of aerospace bearings.
“We congratulate the Akron MRO shop for its commitment to meeting the high standards necessary to achieve the status of Timken Bearing Certification,” said David A. Novak, Jr., Timken director of service engineering and strategic projects. “Through our certification program for other industries, we found that shops earning this status enabled greater bearing life and assembly efficiency.”
Timken will continue to work with the Akron MRO shop to maintain the certification.
“Sharing our best practices through the Timken Bearing Certification is an example of how we continually seek to deliver value to the aerospace industry,” said Mathew W. Happach, Timken director of aerospace bearings. “Aerospace customers know they can trust Timken to meet their strict performance demands. Whether on a bearing or in a service program, the Timken brand exemplifies exceptional quality to the aerospace industry.”
