Senvion upbeat over Nordsee 1 deal

Turbine manufacturer Senvion is upbeat about the roughly Euro 500m ($639m) contract to equip the 332MW Nordsee 1 wind farm in the German North Sea, and is in talks over supplying two other German offshore projects. "As far as the supply contract [for Nordsee 1] is concerned, my colleagues here are diligently at work together with the negotiation team of RWE," Senvion chief executive Andreas Nauen told Recharge in an interview during the WindEnergy Hamburg event. "I'm quite confident. And there also is optimism on the part of our clients." RWE Innogy had originally pre-selected Senvion (formerly REpower) for the Nordsee 1 contract, but decided to re-tender the project after a technical hitch relating to bearings was found in a handful of Senvion's flagship 6.2MW offshore turbines. RWE Innogy had said the re-tender was only a "fallback option" until Senvion can demonstrate that the problem has been fixed. Senvion insists it has found a solution to the technical issue that currently is being validated by certifier TÜV Nord. "We've found a solution for that. The fact that the project is proceeding documents well that the client also believes in it [the fix]," Nauen said. RWE told Recharge it plans to announce the result of the re-tendering soon. It will do so jointly with Northland Power, which earlier this month revealed it has acquired an 85% controlling equity stake in Nordsee 1 and now has a decisive say in who will get the turbine contract for the wind park. An indication that there is a move towards giving the massive contract to Senvion is that Nauen met with Northland Power as early as April – several months before Northland's purchase of the stake in Nordsee One has been made public – and since has been in further talks with the Canadian company. Nauen said Senvion is also finalising negotiations regarding another, smaller, German offshore project, and is in talks with a utility about providing turbines for a larger wind farm in the German North Sea. Germany-based Senvion is a unit of Indian wind turbine maker Suzlon.
