Doosan Engine Receives Orders for low temperature SCR on Marine Engines

On Oct. 6, Doosan Engine announced an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to supply eight low-speed marine engines with the low-temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for eight very large ethane carriers (VLEC). The order marks Doosan Engine’s first commercial application of low-temperature SCR for NOx reduction. Reliance, one of the biggest conglomerates in India, ordered the VLEC vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries earlier in the year. The DelNOx® SCR System for the main engines, developed by Doosan Engine last year, is the world’s first eco-friendly NOx reduction system, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 90 percent. With the International Marine Organization (IMO) Tier III emissions standards, set to take effect in 2016, the market for SCR marine engine systems is expected to grow to billions of dollars. “It is very encouraging that we have succeeded in the first commercialization of the low-temperature SCR system, following our success pioneering the technology,” said Doosan Engine President and CEO Dong Chul Kim, “By receiving the order, we have gained first-mover advantage in the eco-friendly marine engine market.” * SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) The SCR system is an eco-friendly method for reducing NOx emissions. Chemical reactions using a reducing agent in the catalyst layer convert nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases into harmless, pure water and nitrogen.
