Team Dragon, a group of 12-16 year-old pupils from Dyffryn Taf School in Whitland, Wales, had a successful weekend at the Greenpower Education Trust International Finals at Goodwood Motor Circuit on 12th October 2014. The Team finished in 10th place in the International Finals and picked up the ‘Best Newcomer’ Award.
The Greenpower challenge involves students designing, building and racing an electric car. All teams have the same motor and six batteries, but are free to design their car within fixed regulations.
As Kevin Abel, teacher at Dyffryn Taf School states: “This is a tremendous achievement for both Team Dragon and Dyffryn Taf School. This was only Team Dragon’s second ever race and our first ever final, but we managed to beat many of the favourites and veteran teams in a race that involved a record-breaking 79 competing cars. We would like to thank Schaeffler UK for supporting our Young Engineers Club over the past 12 months and for sponsoring our car.”
As a Team Dragon sponsor, Schaeffler UK also supplies the wheel bearings for the car. Karen Preston, Marketing Manager at Schaeffler UK commented: “We are delighted with Team Dragon’s success in its first ever final and hopefully this will encourage even more young people to become involved in such exciting engineering projects. Not only is the Greenpower International Final a racing competition, it also features an engineering careers exhibition and presentations, which gives young visitors the opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for what it is actually like to work in engineering.”
