Cranes remove massive ACL Bearing machinery for India move

Huge pieces of machinery and equipment are being moved from the former Launceston company ACL Bearing for shipping overseas. ACL went into receivership in 2009 and its plants were bought by an Indian company. Cranes are on-site in Rocherlea removing machinery, including a press weighing several tonnes, from the powder metallurgy plant. Former worker Michael Murray, who was made redundant in July, was there to watch. "We used to make parts for Ford and Holden and Toyota and all of those manufacturing companies in Melbourne and on the mainland," he said. "The presses are no longer required in Australia so the Indians have bought all of the equipment and it's being transferred back to India to be relocated and set up over there." "It's pretty sad and pretty nostalgic to think that you worked here for 29 years." Thirty-six workers were made redundant in July. American manufacturer ACL Distribution has bought some machinery from the Indian company to continue producing bearings for racing cars and trucks in Launceston.
