Negotiations took the better part of one year, but it only took a few seconds for Pacific Industrial Co. LTD to make its commitment to Jackson official, with a groundbreaking held at Airport Industrial Park on Tuesday. Pacific Manufacturing Tennessee Inc. (PMT) will manufacture parts for the automobile industry, eventually creating 190 jobs on 40 acres across from McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport and adjacent to Kirkland's Distribution Center. The plant is expected to open next summer and reach full capacity in 2019. An additional 20 acres will be available to accommodate growth. "We chose Jackson because the heart of the people is very warm in Jackson," said Shinya Ogawa, president of Pacific Industrial Co. LTD. "They welcomed us to invest, and they gave us great incentives." A few of the Japanese-based company's leading customers include Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota. The stamping products produced by the Jackson facility will include oil pans, central pillars, luggage hinges, hood lock hooks, and other parts. "We should be at full capacity in five years," Ogawa said. "Expansion? We hope that day comes." Pacific Industrial Co. has five manufacturing facilities in Japan, two in China, two in Korea, and one each in Thailand and Taiwan. The Jackson facility is only the second site Pacific Industrial has selected in the United States. Pacific Manufacturing Ohio Inc. (PMO) was established in Fairfield, Ohio in 1988. The company has grown from 20 employees to 630. Gov. Bill Haslam was one of several dignitaries to address the gathering Tuesday at what will be 555 Smith Lane. "They could have located anywhere, but they chose Jackson," an elated Haslam said. "We are so grateful for (Pacific's) commitment. This is big for Jackson, and it's big for Tennessee." Jackson Mayor Jerry Gist noted five flags — the United States, Japan, the state of Tennessee, city of Jackson and Madison County — that fluttered during the ceremony. "The flags are symbolic of our partnership," Gist said. "The national flag of Japan is a white rectangular flag with a large red disc, which represents the sun, and (Tuesday), the sun is shining on Jackson and Madison County." But Gist said he realizes it's time to get to work. "We have to fulfill our local commitment, because they fulfilled theirs," Gist said. "We're not worried … they will do what they said they would do. Our job is to grow this company." Jimmy Harris, the mayor of Madison County, literally spoke at ground level. "We are standing here today because more than 20 years ago, the leaders in our community decided to invest in this property," Harris said. "It is that kind of vision that produces results." Harris mentioned teamwork that resulted in Pacific Industrial Co. selecting Jackson. "Our team, Team Madison County, really did well," Harris said. "You (also) do business with people you know and trust (and) it's safe to say our team knows and trusts the Pacific team. "And Pacific would not be here today, if they did not know and trust our team." The team also includes architect A2H Inc. and H+M Construction Inc., the general contractor for the project. Roy Heatherly, the president and publisher of The Jackson Sun, who served as master of ceremonies, introduced each speaker, which also included Motohiko Kato, the consul general of Japan in Nashville, and Hisaichi Seko, who becomes the president of Pacific Manufacturing Tennessee Inc. "To say that today we are excited and thrilled would be one of the greatest understatements of all time," Heatherly said. "Today is more than a ceremony — today is a celebration … Words cannot express the sense of accomplishment and the sense of pride all of us have today." Kyle Spurgeon, the president of the Jackson Chamber, said different roles by different people helped land Pacific. "This is about Jackson and Madison County, not one person," Spurgeon said. "This was a team effort building a relationship with a group of people in Ohio and Japan. "We do what we say we are going to do." Ed Jackson, the Republican nominee for State Senate in District 27 — Madison, Crockett, Dyer, Lake and Lauderdale counties — believes Pacific's presence will only continue a ripple effect. "This is huge for West Tennessee, and Pacific can help attract other industries," Jackson said. "And we are very fortunate to have Pacific."
