In a comprehensive study on mobility, Schaeffler has investigated customer demand and behavioral patterns to the year 2025 and identified developments in future mobility requirements in different regions of the globe. The study concludes that, despite continuing globalization, there is not one overall solution to the subject of mobility. The megatrends of globalization, urbanization, digitalization, scarcity of resources, renewable energies and the growing requirements for affordable mobility are leading to changed, much more dynamic market requirements and business models. On the basis of this mobility study, Schaeffler has developed its growth strategy to fulfill these changed market and customer requirements and utilize the enormous growth potential. Environmentally-friendly drives, urban and interurban mobility as well as the energy chain are the areas of focus, which Schaeffler is actively shaping by carrying out its own research and development in cooperation with its customers and business partners. As a global automobile and industrial supplier, Schaeffler offers relevant solutions for the "mobility for tomorrow".
Schaeffler is a development partner with a comprehensive understanding of drive train systems both for vehicles with internal combustion engines and for hybrid and electric mobility solutions. Schaeffler's strength lies in its breadth of knowledge which encompasses not only the automotive sphere but also all other urban and inter-urban modes of mobility such as two-wheeled transport, rail and aviation. In the field of energy, Schaeffler is a development partner for both conventional and regenerative energy production as well as the most efficient possible use of applied energy through products with minimum friction.
Schaeffler Mobility Study Method not chance
Mobility is not only a basic human need, it also has a strong correlation with economic growth. This applies not only for passenger traffic but also for freight transport, particularly on roads. Experts assume that there will be a close correlation between the volume of transport and economic performance. Unlike in the field of total primary energy supply, there has yet to be a disconnect between growth in transport and economic growth. However, rates of motorization in emerging economies are significantly less those in industrialized countries, but they are growing considerably more strongly.
Fundamentally, it is a matter of balancing a rising demand for mobility with the lowest possible use of resources and CO2 emissions. This can only be achieved through technologies which give rise to demonstrable contributions to the reduction in greenhouse gases due to increased customer acceptance and blanket market penetration. However, a global approach is required when considering customer demand. The demand for mobility will increase primarily in the growth regions, i.e. outside the "old" industrial nations. Mobility has become a global need.
Schaeffler's mobility study uses a three-tier methodology. Initially, a matrix was developed which shows patterns of mobility for all global regions using a set of fixed criteria. Patterns of mobility were then produced for twelve selected regions. Finally, the spotlight was focused on four specific areas of future mobility which represent the challenges which Schaeffler can help to overcome.
Global mobility cluster
In order to sort the regional mobility needs systematically, a matrix was developed with the following three dimensions: Degree of urbanization, user purchasing power and economic development status. Clustering is a major consideration for regional transferability of solutions. Taking electric mobility as an example will help to clarify this. This relatively expensive technology is promoted mainly in cities with a high degree of prosperity. The desire for a sustainable life style by educated urban elites is a significant factor here. A regional tendency towards alternative modes of transport can be identified in this cluster.
Twelve sample locations were selected with the aid of the clusters and detailed patterns of mobility were produced for each of these through expert analysis. The patterns provide not only an analysis of the current situation but also an extrapolation to the year 2025. The patterns of mobility reveal one thing above all else: There is no single answer to overcoming the increase in traffic as the specific local boundary conditions vary enormously. It is, however, clear that metropolitan areas have recognized that mobility is a factor in competition between locations.
Overarching challenges
The third step was to identify four specific areas which, in Schaeffler's opinion, will determine the future of mobility. These are:
An assessment of the whole energy chain; future mobility solutions will take the CO2 balance in the whole energy chain into consideration; particular attention is to be given to the production and storage of electricity for electric cars as well as to hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles; the overall static infrastructure must be taken into consideration. Dwindling resources and the major challenges of climate change mean that the global requirement for clean energy is on the increase. A global change in approach is needed, including an optimization of all stages in the energy chain. In this context, renewable energy sources begin to play a central role. Water, wind, and solar power also constitute future-oriented growth fields for Schaeffler.
New mobility ideas for cities. In the future, there will be a demand for an intermodal traffic system in a limited amount of space with a seamless interchange between different modes of transport. This will require new technical solutions. Schaeffler is actively helping to develop this trend, for example, through the eWheelDrive electric wheel hub drive. The compact packaging of the drive modules in the wheel rim creates more space in the interior of the vehicle and increases the vehicle's maneuverability. Highly integrated wheel hub drives are a key component in the new vehicle designs required in megacities. With its innovative sensor bottom bracket technology and the FAG VELOMATIC automatic gearshift system, Schaeffler is making its contribution to establishing e-bikes as the means of transport of the future.
Resource-efficient, interurban mobility: A growing portion of the the world's population needs to be able to move efficiently between urban economic centers. Efficient use of resources is essential for all modes of transport, whether airplanes, high speed trains or cars. Schaeffler is playing a pioneer role in interurban mobility, for example, by developing rolling bearing solutions for the railway sector. For example, with the FAG wheelset generator, Schaeffler can provide a self-contained energy supply for freight wagons, which will enable the remote monitoring of wagons and freight traffic in the future. The Schaeffler Aerospace business unit has developed into the world's leading manufacturer and development partner for special rolling bearings in the aviation industry. The bearings as well as further precision components for the engines of the Airbus A380 are supplied by the Schaeffler product brand FAG.
Environmentally-friendly drive systems: The energy efficiency and therefore environmental compatibility of mobility will, to a large extent, be determined by vehicle drive systems. The development of energy efficient drive systems will therefore be the number one priority for the future. Schaeffler offers solutions for all future mobility concepts and is relying on a diversification strategy. Schaeffler covers the entire spectrum, from the optimization of conventional internal combustion engines and hybrid solutions through to products for all-electric mobility, under the title Efficient Future Mobility. As a leading global high-tech company, Schaeffler also develops market-specific concepts for fulfilling regional environmental standards and enables its customers in all regions to comply with future emission standards. For this purpose, demonstrator vehicles suited to the market were developed for each region, for example, the concept vehicle Efficient Future Mobility India with electronic clutch management or Efficient Future Mobility North America, which demonstrate how a further fuel consumption reduction of up to 15 percent can be achieved using Schaeffler innovations for the drive train.
