Federal-Mogul Corp., a Southfield-based worldwide supplier of vehicle parts, is expanding its Plymouth Township technical center and plans to move more than 150 jobs there. The company plans a $9.4 million addition to its facility on Port Street, just east of Beck, and will move about 90 employees from a Southfield site and about 40 from an Ann Arbor site, plus 21 from a recently acquired site in Ohio, Scott Pepin, the company’s senior vice president for human resources, told the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Seven more employees will be hired there, he said. The board approved a package of real and personal property tax breaks for the expansion. The value of the reductions wasn’t available; Federal-Mogul’s 2014 tax bill from its Port Street site totaled more than $170,000. The technical center currently employs about 175 people, is part of Federal-Mogul’s automobile power train division and is responsible for about $5 billion a year in sales, Pepin said. A press release from the company said the move is intended to streamline operations and increase efficiency. Pepin told the board that having employees from several locations at the same site will help the company better understand the region’s automotive community and with that knowledge help it “grow the business.” The expansion will take the technical center from its current 88,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet. Groundbreaking is expected to begin this summer and employees transferring there will begin moving early next year, the press release said. The press release said the majority of employees now based at the Cleveland facility will be given the chance to transfer to the technical center and that those not part of the transfer will be given severance benefits.
