FedEx Ground is proposing to build a 150,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution facility on a parking lot next to the former Magna Powertrain/New Process Gear factory.
FedEx Ground has presented the proposal for "concept review" to the town of DeWitt planning board.
The proposal calls for FedEx to build the warehouse/distribution center on a nearly 15-acre parcel which is part of the 123-acre former New Process Gear manufacturing facility at 6600 New Venture Gear Drive.
The center would be built on the northeast corner of the site in what was formerly an employee parking lot at the intersection of Fly Road and New Venture Gear Drive. The new facility calls for 291 parking spaces.
ONX1, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based real estate investment company that owns the plant, would sell 15 acres to the developer, Jones Development Co. of Kansas City, Mo. according to the proposal.
The site is zoned industrial. FedEx Ground's next step is to submit a resubdivision plan to DeWitt planners.
The auto plant has been vacant since Magna International Inc., a Canadian company, closed New Venture Gear in August 2012 after a long wind-down of its operations.
The plant, which totals 1.7 million square feet of space, once employed 4,000 people making transmission parts for General Motors and Chrysler vehicles.
Beginning in 1989, New Process Gear changed hands several times before it was bought by Magna International Inc. in 2004.
New Process Gear, made adapters, transaxles, compounders, manual transmissions and transfer cases the parts that turn two-wheeled drive vehicles into four-wheel drive.
In 2013, American Intermodal Container Manufacturing Inc. looked at the vacant auto parts plant for a $92 million factory that would make steel freight containers. That didn't happen, and the company decided to go elsewhere.
