Innovative combination of materials and process technology delivers improved performance from new rigid self-lubricating bushing with wall thickness of 0.5mm Wiesbaden, Germany, June 10, 2015 ... Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (FDML), has added a new thin wall GLYCODUR® material, named G-290, to its range of self-lubricating bushings. The new material provides improved wear resistance and load capacity for applications with minimum installation space in areas including automotive seating and hinges for doors, hoods, trunk lids and convertible tops. Only 0.5mm thick, G-290 provides a premium solution for applications where conventional rigid bushings (above 0.7mm) are too thick and mesh-based thin bushings are too flexible to allow press-fitting and automated assembly. "We anticipated the demand from industry for a high performance bushing material with low wall thickness in order to address the increasing requirements for material properties in tightly packaged assemblies," said Gian Maria Olivetti, chief technology officer, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. "We have been able to deliver the optimal solution through a combination of advanced materials expertise and precision process technology. By introducing this rigid, thin wall product, Federal-Mogul Powertrain now has the most complete portfolio of self-lubricating bearings and bushings in the industry." Previous GLYCODUR® products were based on a steel backing with a sintered tin bronze layer carrying the polymer running surface. The new thin wall range features a resin mixture impregnated directly onto an expanded stainless steel mesh using a proprietary process, providing a highly cost-effective, high performance solution that does not require plating to achieve corrosion resistance in demanding atmospheres and severe outdoor conditions. "G-290 not only overcomes the manufacturing challenges of creating a thin, yet rigid product; it outperforms all the other materials we have tested. Under standardized conditions, it achieved double the load capacity of a material with a conventional steel/bronze backing and only half the wear rate of conventional bronze mesh material of the same thickness," explained Dr. Achim Adam, material development, polymers and surfaces manager, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. "It also exceeds our standard test requirements for press-out force and corrosion resistance."
