3D printed model shows how to store wind energy in gravity

Wind energy is one of the main most promising alternative energy technologies we have, but the unpredictability of wind is a problem. We need some way to store wind energy for times when the wind isn’t blowing, and the slow advance of battery tech isn’t helping. So, why not turn to gravity? There’s a cool new 3D printed model on Thingiverse that illustrates how this relatively new idea works.
Here’s how the contraption works. Wind spins the turbine on the left, which moves the gears connected to the weight in the middle. You can think of this weight as a sort of rudimentary battery. It’s storing the wind power as potential energy, which you can retrieve by releasing the weight. As it falls back down, the weight spins gears that power the fan on the right side.
This is just an example of how energy can be stored in gravity. This concept in real life usually relies on large weights that are raised or powered in deep holes or above ground silos near the turbine. The spinning fan is obviously just a basic way to show that energy is being harvested. You’d ideally want to use the movement of the weights to generate electricity in a real gravity battery.
The fact that you can 3D print almost the entire thing really illustrates how simple and clever this idea is. To make one of these wind batteries yourself, just download the 3D files from Thingiverse and load them into a compatible 3D printer. You’ll also need some small ball bearings to keep all the gears moving smoothly. It consists of more than a dozen individual files so you can make sure each one is printed correctly. The fan component can be swapped out for anything, like a non-printed motor to generate real power. If you want to get really ambitious, you might even want to add some mass to the battery weight for added torque and thus more power generation.
