Sixteen employees were laid off last week from the Keene Timken Co. facility, according to the location’s general manager. Half were in temporary positions, according to General Manager Robert J. Bauman. Keene Racquet Club: 2015 You Are Invited 9403417 - ROS - MB - instory The other half were in full-time positions from half a dozen departments, he said. Both groups were notified of the layoffs — which were effective immediately — last Friday, according to Bauman. The full-time associates will be compensated and receive medical benefits as per company policy, Bauman said. He did not specify how much the compensation would be for and how long these benefits would last. There are 238 employees at the Keene location after the layoffs, he said. The cuts came in reaction to fourth-quarter production numbers and the projected numbers for next year. “We were looking at the demand signals that we get and we made adjustments according to that,” he said. The Optical Avenue plant manufactures highly engineered bearings, alloy steels and related components, and produces parts used in the aerospace and defense industries. Layoffs are not common at the Keene facility, according to Bauman. “Fortunately, this facility has not had layoffs in a couple of years,” he said. Twenty positions were cut in March 2012 — 14 through layoffs, and six through retirements and attrition. Eighteen people were laid off in November of that year. Bauman said workers at the company realize the impact any layoff can have on an individual and make sure to treat the situation with care. “Any layoff is a big deal for us,” he said. “We take it very seriously.” The local plant is one of 64 plants and service centers in 28 countries, according to Timken’s website. These facilities raked in $3.1 billion in sales in 2014 and have approximately 14,000 employees.
