About 70 Timken Co. employees will be losing their jobs during the next 18 months as information-technology operations are moved to India. The company said Monday that it is making changes in its IT operations as part of an ongoing effort to be more efficient and cost-effective. “This structural change will result in the reduction of 70 corporate IT positions in the United States, beginning in October and continuing into early 2017,” spokeswoman Gloria Irwin said in an email. Some leadership roles, jobs requiring close proximity to the company’s data center and a number of functional analysts will remain at corporate headquarters. Employees learned about the cuts last week. The move was described as “optimizing IT operations.” During the next 18 months, the company will centralize its day-to-day IT operations and strategic work at its business and operations center in Bangalore, India. That location will become Timken’s “IT center of excellence,” Irwin said in the email. It will coordinate with smaller regional hubs the company will maintain in the United States, Romania, Poland and France. The company declined to offer additional comment about the change. Earlier this year, Timken acknowledged it had subleased offices at the Hoover District in North Canton and would have 75 IT department employees stationed there. The workers moved to the new space from a location in Canton. At that time, the company said it wanted to have IT workers closer to the new headquarters because it would offer great opportunities for collaboration. Timken has operated in India since 1987 when it formed a joint venture with Tata Iron & Steel. Timken now has two operations in India, Timken India Ltd. based in Jamshedpur and Timken Engineering & Research India Private Ltd. in Bangalore. In 1998, Timken established one of its four technology centers in Bangalore.
