The machine tool program at the Four Rivers Career Center recently acquired a new Hurco 3-Axis Milling machine, weighing approximately 6,900 pounds.
The machine was delivered Wednesday, Oct. 7.
It replaces an Okuma model weighing approximately 9,900 pounds. That machine was donated to the Four Rivers Career Center by Homeyer Tool in 2004 and kept in storage at Union Machinery until 2005 when the career center moved from the high school to its current location.
The old machine was sold to a buyer living in Kentucky. A carrier was on hand Oct. 7 to acquire the old machine and drive it to the buyer in Kentucky.
“Our old machine was outdated. Even if we had it repaired, it was uncertain how long it would be able to last,” said Four Rivers Career Center Director Randy Kosark.
“A majority of machine shops use either Hurco or Haas machines. Those are the common ones,” he said. “We don’t want our students using a machine that no longer is used in the industry.”
Kosark said the Hurco is a good transition to further enhance student training.
“It’s really important for preparation to the workplace,” he said. “Working with this kind of machine makes our students even more employable. It’s a pathway to machine tool prosperity.”
Hurco delivered the new machine to Union Machinery, who then delivered it to the Four Rivers Career Center Oct. 7.
Workers from Union Machinery loaded the old machine out of the shop and on to the flatbed headed to Kentucky. Next, they unloaded the new machine and brought it into the machine tool shop.
Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece advancing in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool. It covers a wide variety of different operations and machines, on scales from small individual parts to large, heavy-duty gang milling operations.
Kosark said it is one of the most commonly used processes in industry and machine shops today for machining parts to precise sizes and shapes.
