The 76 mm bar capacity LA-250 L7 features a 580 mm swing over the bed Bo-Mac Sheffield can now produce machine tool steel rollers faster and more efficiently thanks to its investment in a new Takisawa Taiwan LA-250 L7 two-axis slant bed lathe. The machine, which was supplied by T W Ward CNC Machinery (Ward CNC), joins two Ward CNC-supplied Hartford machining centres already on site. The LA-250 L7 is being used to produce machine tool steel rollers measuring 250 mm long by 150 mm diameter for rolling mill guide equipment as well as a wide range of straightforward turning operations. “Our production of rolling mill guide equipment involves mainly uncomplicated turning tasks so, when we needed to improve our process cycle times, we knew exactly what we required from a new machine,” said Kevin Mitchell, managing director. “The machine provided all the capabilities we require and it was available on a quick delivery and at the right price.” Bo-Mac says the 76 mm bar capacity LA-250 L7 has a number of features that reinforce its cost-effectiveness. These include a 580 mm swing over the bed, a maximum turning diameter and length of 450 mm and 756 mm, respectively, a 254 mm standard chuck and a spindle speed of 3,000 rev/min. The machine was put to work on a range of components at the company’s Sheffield site, which was established more than 30 years ago and today is involved in industry sectors such as automotive, construction, offshore oil and gas, fire prevention, wind power, catering and valve manufacturing. Adept at supplying anything from one-off machined components through to assemblies, Bo-Mac’s production of the tool steel rollers is on average in batches of 12-off. “However, all the different sizes of rollers between them feature a wide range of profiles on the outside diameters, including ‘diablo v-type’ and rollers having one, two or three ‘peaks’ for slitting, so the variations between batches can be dramatic – hence the need for a machine that can easily and quickly be set up and run. And that’s exactly what we have with our new LA-250 L7,” Mr Mitchell added.
