GNTC machine tool director’s program earns NIMS award
The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) gave accreditation to Philip Shirley, Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s machine tool technology program director. Shirley’s program on the Walker County campus is the only one which is nationally-accredited in the state of Georgia.
“In the machine tool industry, a NIMS accreditation is the highest benchmark you can achieve as a collegiate program,” Shirley said. “After 18 years of teaching machine tool, my NIMS accreditation finally validates what I do on a national level.”
This year, GNTC became the peach state’s first college to have a NIMS-accredited program. The organization awarded Shirley and GNTC the honor in August. An extensive two-day on-site evaluation of everything from his curriculum to the knowledge of his students were on display for examination to see if the program deserved such honors.
Highly impressed after the inspection of the program and facilities in Walker County, Ga., the team inspecting the college gave above-average ratings in program features, devices (equipment, tooling and measuring), program administration and program faculty. Leading by example, Shirley earned all 11 machining credentials by himself. They include milling operations, drill press, turning operations, grinding, job planning, benchwork, layout and several others.
“Students are eager to earn credentials from a nationally recognized organization such as NIMS,” Shirley said. “They are proud to show them on their resume and use them in their portfolio at interviews.”
