Rebuilt pump project saves pipeline company half its original budget allows project completion in a fraction of original allotted time
Power Zone Equipment has just completed work on a $2.5 million pump upgrade project for an NGL pipeline in East Texas. Originally, the owner investigated purchasing six new pumps. Power Zone’s engineers determined that by increasing the motor horsepower and adding a sixth impeller to several of the previously de-staged units, the existing pumps would meet their new service conditions. By rebuilding the pumps rather than replacing them, the client saved approximately half of the original equipment budged and completed the project in less than half the lead time of new OEM pumps.
In addition to rebuilding the existing pumps, Power Zone supplied new 900 hp, 2300 volt motors and variably frequency drives. Power Zone coordinated the removal of the pumps, the rebuilding and the reinstallation at three separate pump station sites. Two of the pumps were packaged on custom designed fabricated steel bases with their associated new motors. New dual mechanical seals were custom designed for the high pressure NGL service, including custom Plan 76 leak detection systems mounted to a stainless steel shaded structure.
Other instrumentation included displacement style vibration sensors on both motor and pump bearings, casing temperature monitoring and temperature monitoring on pump and motor bearings. All the instrumentation cables were installed in conduit and routed to a common junction box mounted to each base for clean field installation. Extensive coordination with the owner and their various consultants resulted in systems specifically tailored to the client’s application and operating philosophies. In fact, the instrumentation, seal systems and operations that Power Zone and the owner developed together now serve as the standard design for this client’s future pump systems.
After finishing these stations, Power Zone began work on two additional pump systems intended for installation next year in this same pipeline system. These new pump systems will be made with the same standards that were developed between Power Zone and the client.
