Within just 25 seconds, the liquid steel can be directly cast into strips; the entire rolling process can reduce energy consumption by 80% compared with the traditional process……on October 22, Baosteel’s strip casting technology made its debut in “The 6Th Baosteel Biennial Academic Conference”. It is learnt that the products produced by the first demo line for industrialization of strip casting and rolling in China have been sold in the market in batches, and affirmed by the customers.
Strip casting technology is the most typical short process technology featuring high efficiency, energy saving and environmental protection in the steel industry, and also the most challenging technology in the steel industry. Baosteel’s industrialization research on strip casting technology can be dated back to the first 2-hi strip casting testing machine in China built by Shanghai Iron & Steel Research Institute during the “7th 5-year planning”. On this basis, Baosteel started the brainstorming of key technology for industrialization, independently developed and manufactured a complete strip casting pilot line with complete data detecting measures including steel-making and ladle refining, and overcame more than 20 difficulties. Baosteel independently developed a series of products suitable for process feature of strip casting, and independently solved many practical problems and technology matching problems occurred during the production process. In 2011, Baosteel started the construction of the demo line for industrialization of strip casting and rolling, which is the 5th demo line for industrialization in the world following Nucor USA, Thyssen Germany, Nippon Steel Japan and Posco Korea. After the completion in 2014, the production line entered the stage of trial production. The operation results showed that: the working condition of the line equipment is stable, the casting process is normal, the edge and surface quality of the cast strip is good, and the product quality is affirmed by the market. The first batch of steel for container has won high opinions from a user after trial use, “compared with the traditional hot-rolled sheet, the cast strip has flat surface, uniform thickness, very small wave, and the utilization ratio of container sheet is greatly improved.”
Strip casting technology is a major process technology innovation developed by Baosteel in a sustained way for more than 10 years, is the best practice of Baosteel adhering to resources saving, environmental protection and following a road of sustainable development to realize the compatible co-existence of steel with city. It is an achievement made by Baosteel’s cast strip brainstorming team by adhering to the road of production-university-research union from a high starting point, comprehensively consolidating the internal technology resources in Baosteel Group by means of strengthening the cooperations with renowned universities and research institutes to form a close type innovation team and sufficiently carry out technical exchange at home and abroad.
Now, after the accumulations for years, Baosteel not only owns the complete set of technology for strip casting from process, equipment, control, product to technical service, which is leading in the world, but also forms a state-level technology innovation platform through the industrialization of strip casting technology for talent cultivation, and open for sharing under the support of national policies.
