Makino to boost competitiveness of Singapore base with new factory

TOKYO -- Makino Milling Machine plans to build a new factory for machine tools in Singapore to supplant the existing facility right next door. By replacing aging equipment and introducing more automation, the company aims to reduce production costs and make its Singapore base more competitive, while also answering the call for better-quality machines from the autoparts makers and mold makers of China and Southeast Asia. The Japanese machine tool manufacturer expects to spend as much as 10 billion yen ($80.8 million) to construct the new factory on a 16,100-sq.-meter site adjacent to the existing Singapore facility. This new factory will produce machining centers and assemble electric discharge machines from machined parts, just like the existing factory, and will have a similar capacity of around 100 units a month. Makino still needs to decide how to equip the factory, but the goal is to reduce costs so exports will be more profitable even in the face of the high value of the local currency. The company plans to market the factory's machining centers in Asia and Europe, and to sell the electric discharge machines worldwide. Makino also needs to decide how to use the existing factory after the shift.
