Walthers announced that a modernized 40-foot American Car & Foundry boxcar will be joining its popular WalthersMainline series. The HO scale car is scheduled for release in June.

Road names in the first release of boxcars will include Erie Lackawanna, Green Bay & Western, Illinois Central, Lehigh Valley, Penn Central, Pennsylvania RR, Reading Co., and Southern Ry. Each road name will be offered in three road numbers. An undecorated model will also be available.

Features on the new injection-molded plastic model will include a 10-panel body, tall ladders on the B (brake wheel) end, short ladders on the A end, 8-foot Youngstown doors, and late Stanray 4/4 improved Dreadnaught ends. Up on top, the boxcar will have a Stanray diagonal-panel roof without running boards or mounts and a molded corner grab iron on the B end.

The modernized boxcar will be fitted with roller-bearing or solid-bearing trucks as appropriate, 33” turned metal RP-25 contour wheelsets, and Proto-Max couplers. The boxcars will be priced at $31.98 each. Undecorated models will retail for $29.98.

This Erie Lackawanna boxcar features billboard lettering and the railroad’s EL diamond herald. The car has a November 1979 reweigh date and a two-panel lube plate, which was used from 1974 to 1981.

Green Bay & Western (GBW) is one of eight road names offered in the initial batch of modernized 40-foot American Car & Foundry boxcars from Wm. K. Walthers Inc. The GBW car is equipped with roller-bearing trucks.

The Illinois Central boxcar features the pre-merger “split rail” herald, “Mainline of Mid-America” slogan, and DF2 stencil. Each paint scheme is offered in three road numbers.

The Lehigh Valley boxcar is painted United States Railway Equipment (USRE) Green with railroad’s Black Diamond herald. The USRE builder’s logo is to the left of the door.

Penn Central’s fleet of Deepwater Green cars with the distinct “worm” herald certainly stood out in trains. The PC car is equipped with solid-bearing trucks.

Pennsylvania RR’s fleet of Freight Car Color boxcars could be found on railroads throughout North America. The Walthers model features the railroad’s Keystone herald, sans serif reporting marks, and an X46C class stencil.

The Reading Co. class XMA has a roof painted to match the sides and ends. The modernized 40-foot boxcar has italic “Reading” lettering to the left of the door and the carrier’s Reading Lines herald to the right.
