The new tool claims to help understand bearing-related carbon emissions for ICE vehicles, and energy losses in EVs, while enabling automotive OEMs to gain a distinctive and competitive edge in the market.

SKF India, the Maharashtra-headquartered Tier-1 automotive bearings major, has introduced a unique Auto CO2 calculator tool that will enable its customers - OEMs - to better understand, and address carbon emissions.

The company says that the Auto CO2 calculator is designed to revolutionise the bearing selection process, and give a distinctive and competitive edge to its customers. Using data-driven analytics, the tool provides estimates of carbon emissions for internal-combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, as well as ascertains the energy losses in an electric vehicle (EV). The tool claims to offer valuable insights in the bearing-selection process, aligning seamlessly with SKF's commitment to carbon neutrality, and sustainability objectives that foster an environmentally-responsible engineering approach.

The carbon dioxide emissions and power loss estimations can be leveraged as a starting point to engage with SKF's expert application engineers, who can provide a detailed view of the specific carbon emissions, and power loss profile for the selected bearings. The SKF expert can further provide insights on how the customer's application can be optimised further to reduce energy consumption and corresponding emissions, and improve sustainability performance.

According to Alagesan Thasari, Director, Automotive India and Southeast Asia, “By making our products lighter, more efficient, long lasting and serviceable, we help our customers achieve significant energy savings and carbon reductions. This Auto CO2 calculator tool is another example of how we are continuously developing solutions to help our customers understand and accelerate their journey towards sustainability."

"Calculating CO2 emissions at a bearing level requires resources, data management, expertise and quality processes and aligning all of these can be a challenging task for companies. We believe this tool will make it easier and more tangible for our customers to make data-driven decisions to comply with regulatory norms and meet fuel efficiency standards for their vehicles," Thasari added.
