Electric vehicles (EVs) require robust, weather-resistant, user-friendly and reliable chargers. This is why Microchip has announced its three new flexible and scalable EV charger reference designs. This includes a Single-Phase AC Residential, a Three-Phase AC Commercial with Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) and System-on-Chip (SoC) and a Three-Phase AC Commercial with OCPP and Display.

Microchip provides reference designs that significantly streamline the integration process. These parts include the microcontroller (MCU), analogue front-end, memory, connectivity and power conversion. This allows manufacturers to produce new charging solutions faster.

Joe Thomsen, corporate vice president of Microchip’s digital signal controller business unit said: “Microchip’s E-Mobility team is focused on developing reference designs that our customers can directly use and benefit from”

Thomsen added: “We want to help our customers shorten design cycles by offering complete solutions such as these new EV charger references designs, while also supplying the hardware, software and technical support.”

Manufacturers can scale and adapt the EV charger reference designs based on their specific needs, whether that be residential or commercial charging users. The reference designs are fully compliant with OCPP, which gives manufacturers a standardised way of communicating between the charging point/charging station and the central system, and other communication protocols. This is to ensure interoperability of the charger, no matter the network or vendor.

The Single-Phase AC Residential EV Charger Reference Design is best for a cost-effective and convenient solution for home charging or non-commercial use. The design has taken safety into account, with integrated safety features such as Protective Earth Neutral (PEN) fault detection and Residual Current Device (RCD) detection. The production process is simplified by the on-board high-performance energy metering device which has automatic calibration.

The Three-Phase AC Commercial with OCPP and Wi-Fi® SoC EV Charger Reference Design is designed for both high-end residential and commercial purposes. It can be managed remotely via Wi-Fi SoC and contains an OCPP 1.6 for stacked integration.

The Three-Phase AC Commercial with OCPP and Display EV Charger Reference Design is for larger-scale operations, mainly commercial and public charging. These references come with a complete architecture review, following UL2231. Supporting up to 22kW, the design also features a robust graphical user interface for easy use and a thin-film transistor screen, allowing touchscreen inputs even in harsh weather conditions. The unit has bidirectional charging capabilities as well as a modular architecture.

Microchip does not only supply references but also hardware, software and global technical support. All reference designs are supported by MPLAB® X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to help designers minimize development time, as well as MPLAB Harmony v3 and MPLAB Code Configurator.
