Sumitomo Drive Technologies, a brand of Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America, received the 2024 National Metalworking Reshoring Award. The award was given in recognition of Sumitomo Drive Technologies’ success in bringing manufacturing to the United States through foreign direct investment and to Mexico via nearshoring. The 2024 award was presented on Sept. 13, 2024, at IMTS – The International Manufacturing Technology Show at McCormick Place in Chicago by Harry Moser, founder and president of the Reshoring Initiative.

The award honors companies that have effectively brought to North America the manufacture of products, parts, or tooling made primarily by metal forming, fabricating, casting, or machining, including additive manufacturing. The award is made possible by the Reshoring Initiative; the Precision Metalforming Association (PMA); AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology; SME; the National Tooling and Machining Association (NTMA); and the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association (FMA).

Joe Gopi, director of manufacturing, Sumitomo Drive Technologies, received the award on the IMTS+ Main Stage on behalf of Sumitomo Drive Technologies. He spoke of what receiving the award meant to the company:

“Winning the National Metalworking Reshoring Award is a tremendous honor and validation of our team's dedication to our reshoring and nearshoring strategies. This award reflects our commitment to customer satisfaction and building a strong, resilient supply chain. We are grateful to the support from our supplier-partners and the investment of our parent company, SHI (Sumitomo Heavy Industries).”

Moser noted: “Sumitomo won the 2024 award because they brought work from offshore to both the United States and Mexico, invested a total of $22 million in their projects between 2010 and 2024, including purchases of machine tools from leading IMTS exhibitor companies, and thereby increased their annual revenue by $100 million over this time period. The Reshoring Award has helped accelerate reshoring from 11,000 manufacturing jobs per year in 2010 to 287,000 per year in 2023.”

The 2025 National Metalworking Reshoring Award will be presented at FABTECH 2025 in Chicago. OEMs and contract manufacturers throughout North America are encouraged to apply by June 30, 2025.
