Ceramic bearings for revision THA offered similar outcomes for re-revision as MoP bearings
Researchers included 31,809 Medicare patients who underwent revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) between 2005 and 2013. Investigators compared the use of metal-on-polyethylene (MoP), ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoP) and ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearings. Primary outcomes included 90-readmission, periprosthetic joint infection, dislocation, re-revision or death.
Findings showed the use of CoP bearings for revision THA increased in the study period from 5.3% to 26.6% and the use of CoC increased from 1.8% to 2.5%. Investigators noted there was a decrease in the risk for 90-day readmission and a trend toward reduced risk of infection among patients who underwent revision with CoP bearings. There was a reduced risk of dislocation seen among patients treated with CoC bearings in revision THA.
According to researchers, patients treated with either CoP or CoC bearings were not significantly different with regard to risks for re-revision and morality vs. patients with MoP bearings. ‒ by Monica Jaramillo
